2008 Seattle in September by Glen Campbell
This year’s event was as fun and fruitful as any we have attended in years before. Karen and I met the other CCC members at the I-5 rest stop north of Vancouver, WA. George and Mary Ann Story, Dave and Tanya LaDuca, Ron and Ceritha Willeford, John and Ann Elegant and Gary and Charlotte Burton traveled to Seattle, stopping at Spiffey’s for lunch, then on into Tukwila, checking into the Best Western River’s Edge Motel. The first event was a reception and BBQ by the host, Corvette Marque Club Seattle, (CMCS).
Immediately following the BBQ, the valve cover races began. The Duke Racing Team acquitted themselves well, but came up short of taking home the traveling trophy. It remains with the CMCS for another two years. Following the valve races a group of about thirty or more cars formed up for the Sleepless in Seattle Tour. We followed the interstate highways through Seattle and experienced views of the lights of Seattle. We were supposed to be out about an hour, but just two miles short of our exit back to the motel, an accident backed up traffic on the 405 for nearly 45 minutes. But, even with the extra time on 405, we had a good run.
We got up early, (8am) Saturday and attended a hot breakfast provided by the motel. A Show and Shine was held in the morning at Albert Lee Appliances just blocks from the motel. We had a great turn-out, with probably all of the ninety-nine registered cars, and the weather was perfect. We had a lot of the locals come out to see the pretty cars and ask a lot of questions. We had another surprise provided by Albert Lee. Several of the major brand appliance reps cooked lunch for us or hired chefs to do the cooking. For starters there was quiche, then the pork and/or beef sandwiches, and many desserts. Needless to say, this was a big hit with the Corvette crews. The manager allowed me to climb onto the roof for some great photos of the parking lot full of Corvettes. We had about an hour after the show and shine to get back to the motel and start a super poker run. It was laid out superbly, with great locations for the stations and even included an opportunity for a Dairy Queen stop, which we took advantage of. The course took us over roads curved enough to be fun, great views and was only 50 miles. We got back to the motel in time to change clothes and board school buses for a trip to the water front for the dinner cruise on the Royal Argosy. The CCC folks took time to relax a few minutes at Starbucks for a latte. The dinner was great. I included some photos of the buffet line and our plates on the web site. We had live entertainment from Lance Buller and Stephanie Porter and then returned to the motel about 11pm.
Sunday morning started with a good hot complimentary breakfast, and then it was time for the awards, raffles and prizes. The prizes were top notch and included a drawing for a $1000.00 for gas money.
Karen and I took 4th in our C5 class (97-04), John and Ann took 5th in C6-Z06, Dave and Tanya took 2nd in C6 convt., George and Mary Ann won $60.00 cash in a drawing and $69.00 for MaryAnn’s poker hand,(straight-Jack hi). Charlotte won a new leather coat, and so was probably the biggest winner. I think all of us won several raffle prizes. Karen and I were recognized for being at all of the Seattle in September events since they started.
I took over 150 pictures of the event and they are posted on the website. Choose the slide show to view them. High Desert of Bend OR announced they are starting alternating year’s events with Cascade Corvettes of Eugene, OR starting next year.
